First Day Read Aloud

Tomorrow is the first day of school!  I wanted the perfect book for my very first read aloud in my classroom.  So I did what any Twitterologists (Yea, I just made that up) would do. I sent out a tweet.  I got suggestions of great books that will definitely be on my list to read early in the year: First Day Jitters, Saturdays and Teacakes, and Miss Brooks Loves Books (And I Don't).

But there was another suggestion that I couldn't resist.  Erin Klein (@KleinErin) suggested that I read my favorite childhood book to my students. How cool is that? Just thinking about it brings back memories.  I don't remember many read alouds from my school years, but I do remember this one.  As my teacher was reading I could "see" everything happening in my mind.  I had so many questions swirling around in my head. Questions like: "Why didn't the brother just eat his way through the whipped cream to get out?" and "Why didn't the little boy follow instructions and come back when he was called?"

I actually have a copy of the book in my classroom collection and I usually share it with my students sometime during the year.  But what a great way to start off the year. I just hope they will love it as much as I did.  If you haven't already guessed, my favorite childhood book is  . . . .  The Five Chinese Brothers by Claire Huchet.
What will be your very first read aloud this year?
